Indication for Humulin R U-500

Humulin® R U-500 insulin is used along with diet and exercise to treat high blood sugar in people with diabetes who need more than 200 units of insulin a day.

  • Do not take Humulin R U-500 if your blood sugar is too low or you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Humulin R U-500.
  • Humulin R U-500 is highly concentrated and contains 5 times as much insulin in 1 mL as standard U-100 (100 units/mL) insulin.
  • Make sure you know the strength, dose, and type of insulin prescribed for you. Do not change the strength, dose, or type of insulin you use unless told to do so by your healthcare provider.

What is Humulin R U-500?

Humulin® R U-500 is a concentrated insulin that may be prescribed to people with diabetes who need to take a large amount of insulin to help manage their diabetes. It is used along with diet and exercise to treat high blood sugar.

If you're taking more than 200 units of insulin a day, Humulin R U-500 may allow you to use up to 80% less liquid each day when compared to what you would have to use when taking a U-100 insulin. Humulin R U-500 may also allow you to inject insulin fewer times each day.*

*This depends on your dose and how much insulin the device you're using can deliver in one injection.

One vial of Humulin R U-500 contains as many units of insulin as 10 vials of U-100 insulin.

When does Humulin R U-500 start working?

Humulin R U-500 starts working about 30 minutes after you inject and the effects of Humulin R U-500 may last up to 24 hours. That's why most people will require 2 or 3 injections of Humulin R U-500 per day.

To help reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), it's important to remember to eat within 30 minutes of injecting Humulin R U-500.

If your healthcare provider prescribes Humulin® R U-500 for you, be sure to review the following information:

1) Know that Humulin R U-500 is a concentrated insulin Humulin R U-500 is 5 times stronger than U-100 insulin, allowing you to inject up to 80% less when compared to U-100 insulin.

2) Talk to your pharmacist Your pharmacist may not always have Humulin R U-500 immediately available. They will let you know how long it may take to fill your prescription for Humulin R U-500.

3) Review the distinct label Humulin R U-500 is distinctively labeled from Humulin R U-100. It's important to ensure you have received the correct insulin from your pharmacy. Check for the distinctive Humulin R U-500 packaging, which is marked with a band of diagonal brown stripes, black-and-white label, and specific important information called out in red text.

Taking Humulin R U-500

1) Measure your dose carefully To measure Humulin R U-500, you should use either a U-100 insulin syringe or a volumetric (tuberculin or allergy) syringe as instructed by your healthcare provider. It is very important to understand what the actual dose is in units of Humulin R U-500 your healthcare provider has prescribed and how this dose is measured on your syringe.

2) Make sure you take the right dose Be sure to measure your dose carefully using your prescribed syringe (either a U-100 insulin syringe or a volumetric syringe). Humulin R U-500 is concentrated; it's important that you measure the correct dose.

3) Remember to eat after you inject Don't forget to eat within 30 minutes of injecting Humulin R U-500 to help reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
